    About the Artists

    Shri Manik Kohli, a Harvard World Record holder and International Book of Records achiever, began his musical journey at just four years old under the guidance of his father, renowned guitarist Shri Sanjeev Kohli. Initially a drummer, he later gained recognition for modifying the Spanish guitar to play like a sitar. A graduate of Ramjas College, Delhi University, and a master’s degree holder from Panjab University, Manik has won numerous prestigious awards, including the Sangeet Shri title and National Balshree award. He has performed for former President Ramnath Kovind and collaborated with artists like B Praak, Sunanda Sharma, and Jaani.

    Dr. Mahendra Prasad Sharma, born in Varanasi, is a distinguished Tabla artist and scholar. A devoted disciple of Pt. Chhote Lal Mishra of the Banaras Gharana, he holds degrees from BHU, Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya, and a Ph.D. from Panjab University. An accomplished author of two books on Tabla, he is also a certified radio artist. Dr. Sharma has represented Indian classical music globally, serving as a Tabla teacher and performer at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Cultural Cooperation, Trinidad and Tobago, under the ICCR, Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi.

With 12 breathtaking performances spread over six days, the Sammelan promises an unforgettable journey through the soul-stirring melodies of Hindustani and Carnatic music, the intricate rhythms of Kathak, the grace of Bharatanatyam, and the expressive storytelling of Odissi.

    The 305th Monthly Baithak featured a mesmerizing Sitar recital by Vidushi Dr Shrabani Biswas, an eminent Sitar exponent from Banaras. The event, held at M.L. Koser Indoor Auditorium from 6:30 pm onwards, was a delightful experience for the city’s music lovers.

    Dr Shrabani Biswas, a Top-grade All-India Radio and Doordarshan artiste, is a distinguished musician and educator. She serves as an Instrumental Music (Sitar) teacher at the Bharat Ratna Pt. Ravishankar Interpretation Centre, Sangeet Natak Akademi, Varanasi. Empanelled with ICCR, she has performed and conducted workshops across India and abroad. A recipient of several prestigious awards, she has composed 40 original pieces in various ragas and served as a judge for major music competitions. She also portrayed young Siddheshwari Devi in Mani Kaul’s Siddheshwari.

    Adding to the concert’s charm, she was finely accompanied by eminent Tabla player Jyan Swaroop Mukherjee from Banaras, whose rhythmic brilliance enhanced the performance. At the end of the program, Shri Sajal Koser, Secretary of Pracheen Kala Kendra, honoured the artists with uttariya and memento, marking yet another successful edition of the Monthly Baithak series.

    The 304th Monthly Baithak of Pracheen Kala Kendra was a mesmerizing evening of classical music held at M.L. Koser Indoor Auditorium. The event featured a soulful performance by Kolkata-based Sarod exponent Kalyan Mukherjee, who Germany-based Tabla virtuoso Florian Schiertz ably accompanied. Together, they created an enchanting atmosphere with their masterful rendition of Indian classical music.

    At the end of the program, Sh. Sajal Koser, Secretary of Pracheen Kala Kendra, honoured the artists with Uttariya and a memento, marking the successful conclusion of yet another remarkable Baithak.

    Pracheen Kala Kendra hosted a distinguished book launch ceremony for “The Maestros I Met”, a compelling work by senior journalist S.D. Sharma, at M.L. Koser Indoor Auditorium, Sector 35B, Chandigarh. The book provides an insightful account of Sharma’s interviews with some of the greatest icons of Indian art and culture. It offers readers a rare glimpse into their lives, philosophies, and artistic journeys.

    The event was graced by Prof. Arun Grover, Former Vice Chancellor of Panjab University, Chandigarh, as the Chief Guest, along with Dr Harish K. Puri, renowned political scientist and historian, and Guru Dr Shobha Koser, celebrated Kathak maestro and Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee, as Guests of Honor. Sh. Sajal Koser, Secretary, Pracheen Kala Kendra, inaugurated the ceremony with words of gratitude, while Sh. Bhupinder Singh Mallick efficiently compered the event.
    The ceremony also featured compelling reflections from Dr S.S. Bhatti and eminent architect Sh. Sanjay Versain, senior journalist and editor of The Times of India, Sh. Neeraj Raizada, and Sh. N.S. Minhas. Adding a personal touch to the event, Sharma’s friends and colleagues shared heartfelt anecdotes, celebrating his invaluable contributions to the arts and journalism.
